Explorer 6 update

I just had to reinstall Windows ME and several attempts to install Explorer 6
SP1 have failed. I get the error message that the Resume Windows Update link
refers to a location that is not available. It seems that the file
ie6setup.exe does not get downloaded. At least there is no such folder in
the temp folder and it does not show when I do a search. All other files
listed in the folder iesetup (configuration setting) are present.

Does anybody know where I can find the ie6setup.exe file or how I can get it
to download?

I also have been unable to install the security update KB888113. It tells
me that the installation was successful, but it pops up again every time I
run Windows update.

Any suggestion?

X-post to WinME General

Did you uninstall IE6 SP1 prior to reinstalling WinME?

No, I did not uninstall IE6 SP1 prior to reinstallation and I would not know
how to do that unless it is the same as Q891781, the only Internet Explorer
program on my add/remove program list.

Btw, the folder Internet Explorer\uninstall information contains several
items renamed ie5old.

What you have now is a fine mess! An Internet Explorer version 5 and 6
soup mix that is next to imposible to repair without a complete format
and reinstall of Windows ME.

You can try http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html to completely remove
IE and then see if you can install IE from scratch again, or reinstall
ME after you IEradicate it.

Too late to worry about that now. (It would have been listed in Add/Remove
Programs /prior/ to the reinstall.)

Please await assistance from one of the WinME experts.

Try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

Update IE6 again and you should be able to install all the troublesome
components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

Thank you -- it worked like a charm.

Note: Someone had suggested a similar procedure in response to another post
regarding the same problem, which did not work for me. I think this one
worked because, while having Windows Update open, I first moved the old IE
info into a separate folder and then attempted the download.

Thank you. I would have followed your suggestion, but I first tried the
method suggested by OOPS below, which seemed to be a little less drastic.
The installation was successful and there was not need for the IEradicator.

Great news!

Glad it worked for you too.

Cheers.

A quick note if anyone reads this:

IERadicator will ruin WinME and System Restore.

Usually there are other options available to solve IE problems in WinME.
