After a hard drive failure, I did a full restore of the hard drive including
"System State". Now I experience "Explorer.exe - Application Error" during
boot-up when KB916281 is installed.
I have tried uninstalling all updates, then re-installing them, but the
result is the same. All works okay until KB916281 is installed. I have also
tried to "repair" IE using rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance
"C\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g
Still I experience the "Explorer.exe - Application Error" when I re-install
KB916281.
Any suggestion what else I could try?

You might have malware present.
Disable all Intenet Explorer add-ons and Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) and
try again.
Control panel "Internet Options", tab "Programs", button "Manage Add-ons".

Hi Robin,
Thanks for your assistance. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with IE
version 6.0.2800.1106, and could not find the "Manage Add-ons" button, or
anything similar. I do have Norton Antivirus 2006 and this has not detected
any malware.

I would really appreciate all guidance, assistance, pearls of wisdom, etc.

Right, sorry, previous instructions were for XP. Since you've already had
one hard drive failure, let's make sure that it is still in good shape
before going any further.

Open "My Computer". Right-click on drive C: and select "Properties". Click
tab "Tools", click button "Check Now", check both check-boxes, click
"Start", follow instructions to restart Windows. The hard disk will be
checked during the Windows restart, and it might take up to an hour. Take a
note of any filenames identiified as having bad clusters replaced by
Windows: these files are almost certainly goners. Let us know the outcome.

If the disk checks succeed, try the following.

Open control panel Internet Explorer, click tab "Advanced", scroll down to
look for "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)" and
uncheck it. [I'm not sure whether this might be another XP-only option].
Restart Windows to be on the safe side.

Now try the 916281 update again.

If that works then try re-enabling the third-party extensions. If you then
get crashes, you know one of your third-party extensions is causing the
problem, not IE itself. Unfortunately, finding out which one is the problem
is not easy unless you have XP SP2. On Windows 2000, it's a matter of trial
and error with uninstallation and re-installation of third-party
applications that modify Internet Explorer.

Another thing: have you ever updated to Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1?
If not, try it from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Installing this might clear up many IE problems for you.

Hi Robin,

Many thanks. It is all working now with KB916281 installed.

I suspect it was Google Desktop that was causing the "interference". As
soon as I disabled the "third party browser extensions" and re-installed IE6
plus all the maintenance, as you suggested, all worked okay.

You're a star!
