Right, sorry, previous instructions were for XP. Since you've already had
one hard drive failure, let's make sure that it is still in good shape
before going any further.
Open "My Computer". Right-click on drive C: and select "Properties". Click
tab "Tools", click button "Check Now", check both check-boxes, click
"Start", follow instructions to restart Windows. The hard disk will be
checked during the Windows restart, and it might take up to an hour. Take a
note of any filenames identiified as having bad clusters replaced by
Windows: these files are almost certainly goners. Let us know the outcome.
If the disk checks succeed, try the following.
Open control panel Internet Explorer, click tab "Advanced", scroll down to
look for "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)" and
uncheck it. [I'm not sure whether this might be another XP-only option].
Restart Windows to be on the safe side.
Now try the 916281 update again.
If that works then try re-enabling the third-party extensions. If you then
get crashes, you know one of your third-party extensions is causing the
problem, not IE itself. Unfortunately, finding out which one is the problem
is not easy unless you have XP SP2. On Windows 2000, it's a matter of trial
and error with uninstallation and re-installation of third-party
applications that modify Internet Explorer.
