Explorer.exe/Black Screen

I have seen others with this problem but I haven't found a solution an
maybe my situation is unique, I don't know, I just know I need help!

During the last week I noticed Norton antivirus was not running. I ha
to reinstall it to get it working. As I didn't actually know how lon
this had been off I ran a scan (found a few cookies that didn’t see
very problematic) and ran spybot as well to be sure. Spybot foun
others but would not let me repair them successfully but these als
seemed non-threatening. I tried to restore at an earlier date but i
would not let me do this nor would it successfully backup either. I
also wouldn't successfully install windows updates either. I ran chkds
on drive C: and rebooted. Then I got the black screen after th
"welcome" screen with a moveable curser and the first thing that pops u
is "Windows Calendar Not responding" or something like that, the
another pop up says the screensaver won't load and than windows updat
thing comes up where I can get on the internet but still can't do an
windows updates. A friend showed me how to run explore.exe though th
task manager but that only worked once. I can't get it to load up.
really don't want to reinstall Vista so is there a fix? I can get int
safe mode fine and see my files. I desperately need help!!! Thanks

Did you try running System Restore from Safe Mode?

Did you try the "Last Known Good Configuration" option?

If you want to run System Restore either disable your Norton, or if that
isn't possible, untick the box in Norton that says "Norton Product Tamper
Protection" or something similar. Norton will prevent S/R from working
properly unless you do something like that. Good luck.

That's what it says. It's in the Miscellaneous section of the settings.
Click on any settings button of the main screen to get to where the
miscellaneous section is. It's probably best to turn it back on when
done...

My wish: that I could remember to turn that off *before* my first attempt
at system restore fails :-)

I think I was able to back it up in safe mode but I'm not sure a
nothing is different (still goes to black screen, etc) and I still can'
do a backup when I DO get the dsktop up, which I can. I found thi
trick on another site. I have to start the task manager from the blac
screen and ONLY if I hit "show processes from all users" will it let m
start the new task (explorer.exe). Comes everytime this way but now
need to a) figure out how to get it to stay in the start up/task mange
without having to manually start it, and b) fix the problems with no
being able to back up or install windows updates. Everything seems t
work ok once I force explorer to work but there's definately somethin
going on that I need to desperately fix
