Sometimes Explorer gets to a point where its "stuck on stupid", and the
various templates for folders, and even pretend Control Panel "folders",
start becoming somewhat odd and inappropriate, with odd and inappropriate
columns or buttons in the Toolbar; that is "stuck" with the wrong template
used. For example, C:\Windows might show as a folder using a Pictures and
Videos template, and there's no way to change this, except by adding and
removing columns; however the Toolbar still shows inappropriate tasks. If
you change the columns in C:\Windows, then a folder you DO want to use
Pictures and Videos template, like C:\Users\(You)\Pictures, starts mirroring
the wrong columns your chose for C:\Windows.This is just one example.
Basically, there are Six Types of choosable Folder Templates, if the
Properties of the folder allows it:
All Items
Documents
Pictures and Videos
Music Details
Music Icons
Contacts
Using Folder Options -> View -> Apply to Folders, depending on the Template
the folder is using, will apply that folder's view to all other folders
using that template.
However, your initial Computer view of your drives and network shortcuts
uses a template that's not choosable by normal means.
To reset the template type for the Computer "folder", you'll have to do
this:
In the Registry Editor, go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local
Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
Then right-click on the key (folder) BagMRU, in the LEFT-hand pane, and
choose
delete. Then go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local
Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
Right-click on the key (folder) Bags, in the LEFT-hand pane, and choose
delete.
Log off and log back on to Windows to re-create the keys (done
automatically), and start anew. This will reset all your folders to the
default templates.
