I have recently completed a brand new installation of the 32-bit version of
Windows Vista Ultimate. After completing all the necessary windows updates
and having installed my current anti-virus software I installed the latest
version of Messenger and included the 'Family Safety' element as part of the
installation.
Having completed the installation process very smoothly I then found that my
Windows Explorer began to crash and restart on a regular basis. I could
reproduce the crash by having two Explorer windows open at once and then
right-clicking on the Explorer window in the background (over one of my
drives, for example) and after showing the context menu I would get the
restart message.
After a few goes at restarting my explorer the 'Problems and Solutions'
Control Panel applet informed me that I needed to install the latest
Performance and Reliability update for Vista. Since I had already run a full
Windows Update process I had already obtained and installed the necessary
updates.
I then began the process of working out which installation (or update) was
the offending app. Since this was a virtually clean install of Vista I began
with the latest Messenger download. Fortunately, the different parts of the
latest messenger are listed as separate items in the installed programs. I
removed the Family Safety pack first, rebooted my machine and so far I have
not had any Windows Explorer crashes.
I thought this might be useful to other people if they are having the same
problems, but would also aprreciate any input as to why this might be
occuring as I would be interested in using the Family Safety pack.
