What causes this? Every couple of hours, the system becomes jittery and
slow. Digging into the details, Explorer is using upwards of 40% CPU and
short-lived DLLhost.exe processes labeled "COM surrogate" are repeatedly
being spawned, one every ten seconds or so.
The parent process of the DLLhost.exe processes is a svchost.exe hosting
two services: DCOM Server Process Launcher and Plug and Pray. This
svchost.exe shows mildly elevated CPU use.
I've turned off indexing and most of the other annoying things that
randomly grab CPU and slow the system down. Indeed I find filename only
searches faster with the indexer off than with it on (and with the
indexer on, I sometimes even get false negatives with filename searches).
That includes disabling the relevant services.
Any idea what could be causing this Explorer/DCOM/PnP/DLLhost spasm to
recur every few hours? It lasts up to ten minutes and in particular makes
gaming impossible until it's over.
