Explorer Windows on XP

When I click on the red X to close a window, the window does close as
expected. If I then go into task manager the session that I have just closed
is still showing as running. This is OK until I have a few 'invisible'
sessions running and the application, for example windows explorer or media
player freezes. I then clear all the active sessions from task manager and
all is OK until a few more build up.

Annoying. Any ideas please on how to fix this.
