Exporting / Importing DNS Zones

Setting up a new 2008 R2 AD/DNS server. What is the easiest way to get the
DNS zones off the old 2008 server and on to the new one? I see you can
migrate them from one server to the other, but is there a simplier way?
Like export/import?

Thanks!

Hello tandrist,

Use AD integrated zones and they will be copied automatically with AD replication.

Best regards

That depends on YOUR current scenario.

If the new DC is a replica in the current domain/forest, follow Meinolf's
suggestion.

If the new DC is in a completely new forest, you can use Zone transfers by
setting up a secondary at the other machine and allowing zone transfers from
the source. Or you can use DNSDump from Dean Wells.

DNSdump Version 2.0 - Dean Wells, MSEtechnology - July 2003 ...
www.reskit.net/DNS/dnsdump.cm_

But DO NOT USE DNSDUMP if it is in the same forest.

I am replacing one Global Catalogue/Primary AD/DNS with a different one,
basically just to replace a 2008 server with 2008 R2. Single forest, same
domain.
Bringing one online and demoting removing the other. And yes we do have a
secondary AD/DNS server onsite for replication.

Thanks!

Then Meinolf's suggestion works nicely. Basically, it's automatic if the
zone is AD integrated. If it is not working, then there is an AD replication
issue.
