Express Windows Update results in 0x80244008 error

I run XP home edition with security patches current through April 12.
When I try to get May’s security updates, I get an 0x80244008 error.
I’ve tried everything I can think of including uninstalling Windows
Media Player 11 (which I had installed on 4/16) and temporarily
disabling my anti-virus NOD32 & anti-spyware Spy Sweeper.

I’m frantic! How can I get my security updates?
