Extender and PVR

I am looking at new computers and have decided on a Media Center 2005. I am
also considering a Media Center Extender. I understand that with an extender
you can access and watch or listen to your media files including recorded
ones. Can you also record from your extender or do you have to go to your
computer to do set up a TV recording?

If I was in the market for an extender, I'd wait for
the Xbox 360 to be released later this year. It will
include built-in extender capability, HDTV support,
and a DVD player. Totally blows away the current
generation of extenders.

No more so than any other game console launched in the past few years ($299
to start).

I believe that $299 is also the suggested retail price
for the current-generation Linksys extender.

http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...3314&FGL=1-001

So when you consider how much more you'll get with the
Xbox 360 (state-of-the-art game console + 2nd-generation
media extender), the price is actually very attractive.

It's worth nothing though that the street price of the set top box Extenders
tend to run a good bit under MSRP (I've seen them as low as $225). If
history is any guide, no retailers will discount the Xbox 360 (especially
when it first hits the streets). I think the most I've ever seen a current
Xbox discounted off MSRP is $4...

^^^^^^^

Funny how a simple single-character typo can sometimes
completely change the meaning of a sentence. ;-)

But yes, that is worth "noting". But even if you compared
$200 for the current STB extender versus $300 for the Xbox
360, I still think the Xbox 360 is a better deal.

I hope the Xbox 360 includes support for more video
formats than the current extenders. Has anything
been announced regarding that?

Good catch :-)

Nothing has been announced regarding file format support.
