Hi, I have an 80gb seagate HDD and I bought an external caddy for it a
few weeks ago. I plugged it into my main PC runninng windows XP with
USB 2.0 and it recognised it fine and I had access to all my documents.
I then tried it on my second PC running windows 98 and it didn't work
at all. Then I tried it in my laptop running Windows 98 and the same
problem occurred. Then I tried installing the driver CD that came with
it and it was impossible to find what file I was ment to install. I
went to explore the CD and was confronted with a list of options: Card
Reader, Mp4 player, External HDD external case, etc. I selected hdd
external case and then (i think) i was givin' the choice of what model
it was. The problem is that the HDD has no model no on the case or on
the box it come with so I don't know what model I should install.
Just to make sure it wans't a faulty case, I tried it on another laptop
running windows 2000 prof. and had USB1.1 and worked fine. NO DRIVERS
NESSERSARY. So what I done was copy the driver (USBSTOR.sys) and the
information file (USBSTOR.inf) from the other laptop and installed it
on mine. I installed my HDD using these drivers and in the device
manager everything seemed ok. (it was recgonised an USB Mass Storage
Device under USB controllers). I then went into My Computer and there
was no drive icons.
IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN GET THIS HDD TO WORK WITH WIN 98 FIRST EDITION?
IT USES AN IDE INTERFACE, IT IS A 3.5" HDD, CASE HAS EXTERNAL POWER. IT
IS FORMATTED IN FAT32 FILE SYSTEM. I DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE MY OPERATING
SYSTEM.
Please Help!!!

Hi I got the same problem:
I solved it that way

open settings in control panel
go to "system"
then open "hardware profile"
double click on disk controller
your HDD should appear
double cclick on it and assign a letter.
That should do ok
But
then, after restarting you may face another problem:
when you open your HDD you are prompted to format it; if I do it, of course
, i loose all the data.
That's where I am and I can't solve that problem.
Any idea ?
