How depends on the manufacturer and whether or not they provide for one.
Check the system documentation for instructions on creating them. If you
were sold the laptop with the OS installed, it should have either included
the recovery disk or a recovery partition on the hard drive itself. If not,
it wasn't a legal sale. Most manufacturers will provide a set of recovery
disks for a nominal fee. Your other option would be to invest in some
imaging software and save a base image to DVD.
