I got an update notification and clicked to donwload those updates. Then the
notification icon at the task bar disappeared. It then seemed nothing being
downloaded. Several hours later I went to the windows update website and
check for the update history, I found that there were failure signs for all
those necessary updates with error code 0x80246008.

Before I have just made uninstallation of IE7 and then a upgrade
installation for repairing my windows problem.

My compter now nuns on Windows XP Profressional SP2 and IE6.

Please help

A download must be restarted because the location of the source of the
download has changed

Walter,

Download and save: AU Client and WindowsUpdate Reset Tool (v77e)
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Rele...eleaseId=16139

Once the download completes close *all* open programs and browsers.
Now run au_client_tool_v77e_codeplex.exe
Reboot afterwards and see if the updates come down via AU.

You can start update detection by going to Start > Run > type in or
copy&paste the below into the Open: line and then click OK or press Enter

wuauclt /detectnow

IF the updates download but do not install, then see this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Do Method 1. The registering of wups2.dll from a Command Prompt should
*not* be necessary with the lastest version of the Windows Update Agent.
We'll see <w>

I have followed the steps in Article ID 910337 to verify that BITS is
correctly configured and it returned "Error 1083: The executable program that
this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.", and
followed the steps to start the BITS, but still it could not be started.

What should I do?

Walter,

Suggest you first do an online scan to determine if any 'unwanted
visitors' are present:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

If nothing is detected see this, especially if a Symantec [Norton]
"product" is installed:

I have done the steps for restarting the BITS with regard to the Article ID
910337 and the error 1083 trouble shooting. (Before so doing, I had not done
a virus and spyware scanning). After I retarted the computer, I received the
update notice too and choosed to download all the updates (about 10 items)
except the two IE7 and Windows XP SP3 and I could see it was downloading.
Then, when I finished work and shut down my computer, it gave message that it
needed to install the 21 ??!updates before shutting down. Next day, I
started the windows and do my browsing using the IE6, it could start my home
page and show the content completely. However, when I clicked some link or
some webiste in My Favourites, it started another blank window and then
hang up (at another one time, it started several blank windows) while the
first window was flsshing at intervals blank out and showing content and did
not respond too. I tried to close the browers and it responded a instant
atermination pop up for IEXPLOR.EXE.. the following is the details
information:

=APP Name: IEXPLORE.EXE szAPPVer 6.0.2900.2180 szModName: hangapp
azModVer 0.0.0.0 offset:00000000

Then I have use my antivirus software and some other virus online scanner to
scan my compter but no defect was reported.

I don't know what happed to the IE EXplorer 6 and the present problem was
pertaining to the installed updates or other reasons. (I have unstalled IE7
before for repairing the Windows XP SP2)

Moreover, I have visited the windows update website and tried to see my
installation history, but it responded with a pop-up window for installing
the window update tool before I could go on. I don't know if the window
update tool is an offical tool or not as I have installed the Active X
control on my first visit after the upgrade installation for reparing my
Windows XP.

Kindly please help

If you're prompted to, install the latest ActiveX control, Walter.
A newer version is being released, that's why you're seeing that prompt.

That behavior may be caused by incompatible add-ons or toolbars. What is
installed in terms of add-ons and toolbars in IE ?
