Fail to install Patch (840987)

I am using Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition and a Xeon processor machine.

When installing WindowsServer2003-KB840987-x86-cht.EXE, it failed to install
"ntoskrnl.exe" and the system hanged. And the windows cannot reboot due to
the missing file of "ntoskrnl.exe"

To fixed the problem, I need to copy the "ntkrnlmp.exe" to the folder
"system32" from the installation CD.

Is there any solution to help me to install the new patches? I found that I
need to disable the automatic windows update option right now.

Very similar with me.
The PC updates for ever (after hours
I had to switch off and to
restore from image).
Repeated 3 times, no success.
