I am not really qualified to answer this but my impression was that Microsoft
had ceased to provide updates for Win2K. That could be the reason.

But a MSVP might very well correct my answer.

"You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" or "Error 0x80072EFD" error message when you try to use Windows Update"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Also, are you running Zone Alarm? If so, add download.windowsupdate.com to the privacy (safe list) in Zone Alarm.
Is your system using a proxy server?

Read the entire article, including the More Information section. Do post back with questions and progress.

Hi Peter,

MS continues to provide "securityupdates" for Win2000, although only for W2K with Service Pack 4.
"No further updates planned. Customers must be running SP4 to continue to receive monthly security updates.
Microsoft recommends updating SP4 machines to Update Rollup #1 (KB891861)."
