My windows update scans for updates and goes thru the process of downloading
the update, either via auto or custom, and all I get is that problem on your
computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed. I turned
off the virus controls and nothing changes. I am able to download from other
microsoft sites but not the update site

Craig,

Post the LAST 40 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log located in the
WINDOWS directory [folder] into your reply, please.

Which firewall is being used ?
Are there any Security programs installed that monitor ActiveX controls
for Internet Explorer ? [ex: Spyware Blaster, Spybot, etc]

SOAP_E_CLIENT The message was malformed or incomplete. No reason to

2007-03-07 08:59:25 1192 6a0 PT WARNING: SOAP Fault: 0x00012c

The above section of the log is documented in this MVPs blog:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/athif/archiv...-0x00012c.aspx

The OS is Windows Server 2003 and it involves a driver, http.sys.
MS offers a resolution for it here -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898708

I'd bet that the issue your system is experiencing is also related to a
driver, in this case, from McAfee.
Was McAfee preinstalled on the system by Dell and was the system
previously able to successfully update via the Windows Update site ?

You stated that you " turned off the virus controls ". There are Default
settings that protect Internet Explorer, specifically, BHOs [browser
helper objects], by add-ons.
Between those and the McAfee firewall, that's the most likely place to
look for the root of the issue.

So, open Internet Options in the Control Panel, please.
Click the Programs tab
Click the Manage Add-ons button
The Manage Add-ons window will open
Set the drop down window where it says ' Show: ' to 'Add-ons that have
been used by Internet Explorer '
Click on every Name that states McAfee as the Publisher to highlight
them, then put a mark next to Disable
After you Disable each one click OK
Close Internet Properties by clicking OK.

Now try to access Windows Update
If the system is able to, then it's one of the disabled Add-ons that is
causing the issue. If not, then go back into the Control Panel
Open the Windows Firewall
Put a mark next to 'On', click OK

Now totally disable the McAfee firewall from within the program.
Restart the system and try to access Windows Update.

Error messages that you may receive when you try to download and install updates from the
Windows Update Web site, from the Microsoft Update Web site, or from a WSUS server:
"0x800704DD," "0x80240020," or both
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910341

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x80240020 error.

questions 1) McAfee was not a preinstalled option on my system that is 3
years old and have been doing updates regularly thru the update site.

Please check the first article TaurArian posted, specifically -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910341

>> Step 5: Verify that the following registry entries are present

BEFORE making any changes to the registry, STRONGLY suggest you read
this - How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and
Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Better safe, then sorry <w>

Well I tried the fix in article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910341 and
no luck. i get the same message although it does seem to take longer to fail
than before. The Fixe asks to change the registry
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn" and I did find that the SensLogn
was in the Notify_Disable key as well. Here is the last few line from the
log. Any oher ideas?

Craig,

> I did find that the SensLogn was in the Notify_Disable key as well.

Where is this 'Notify_Disable' key located, Craig ?

0x80240018 operation failed due to missing user token
0x80240020 nteractive user is missing to finish the operation

What the system is experiencing is due to it's inablility to interact
with the WU site as a Trusted or recognized User (e.g Admin).

Are there any other User Accounts on the system with Administrator
rights ? If so, try to use that User Account to obtain and install
updates. If that resolves the issue, then the issue stemmed from a
corrupted User Account.
IF there are no such other User Accounts, suggest creating one to see if
that resolves the issue.

IF that does not resolve the issue, then it's DEFINITELY attributable to
McAfee as it's system issue.
