Failed install of KB 884020 hotfix results in al updates failing

I have Windows xp sp 2.
Some software that I use needs the hotfix KB84020 installed so it can use ip
addresses in teh loopback subnet.

The first time I tried to install KB884020 it got as far as making the
restore point and hung. Every time I now try to apply 884020 the same thing
happens. It also leaves a temp folder on my drive with the contents of the
update.

Even more worrying is that no updates will install now. I logged onto
Windows Update this morning to do an update and all patches downloaded OK but
the installation just hangs. Obviously this is a very serious issue if I
cannot apply secureity [patches to my system.

Please Advise

I made the initail post,

I got around this issue by disabling System Restore
