Failed to install KB89461

My Win XP SP2 machine with Windows Update would not install KB89461.
It would start running the update, and a few seconds later say 'update
failed' with no other error information.

c:\winnt\windowsupdate.log showed this as a possible clue:

wuauclt handler: failed to spawn COM server

A lot of Google searching provided this link:

It worked! Somehow deleting that registry key fixed it.
