Trying to do critical updates - all four failed
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)

with error 8007057

Any suggestions - I am running XP, have SP2 installed, using NAV2005 package
- up to no all patches and updates have worked fine. Tried going back to a
restore point but same error.

cheers

Nope, it didn't work. Here is a screenshot of the error message:

Hi

It looks like one digit is missing from your error number, it is
supposed to be 8 of them.

From Start/Run run this exact command:

notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log

See if you can find any clues and/or error massages/numbers there and
post e.g. the last 30 lines of that log here.

Hi

Error 0x800704dd is

Error_Not_Logged_On to network

Error 0x80240020 is

SUS_E_NO_INTERACTIVE_USER
interactive user is missing to finish the operation

Those errors have been reported several times before in the newsgroups,
and the suggested repair tips have not worked.

I suggest you install the updates manually.

To find the downloads, you can do like this:

Add the KB number behind the URL http://support.microsoft.com/kb/,
like this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873339

Then select the security bulletin link for "IT Professionals", and you
will find the link for manual download of the update.

I think it would be more useful to post the context where you found
the error code you posted (which I assume was some kind of typo
since you only included 7 hex digits).

In case the problem has something to do with proxy or firewall
misconfiguration try this:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=26&ln=en

This is going to solve your problem, think:

Go to the \windows\inf directory, find the file branches.inf, right click
it, go to properties, uncheck the read only box and run the updates.

Please don't tell Microsoft about this fix. Let's keep it our secret.

This did it for me....

I FINALLY got rid of the yellow icon with the "92%" completed message.

Brand new Dell...out of the box and it's been stuck updating for two days!

Thanks!
