Failed .NET Framework update

I keep getting a notice for this update, but then it fails to install. This
is the message I receive when it says the install has failed: Update to .NET
Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86
(KB963707)

I am having difficulty installing an HP printer on my ethernet. Could this
be related? What should I do about this failed update?

I am running Home Edition of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 installed.

Perhaps this is relevant:
When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0,
or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows
Installer error code "1603"
