I have a new laptop PC with Vista, and have installed on it Office Enterprise
2007.
The following update fails to install with the following details.

I am very concerned about this failure.
Can anyone help me please?

Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2007 (KB956358)
Installation date: ‎10/‎12/‎2008 20:47
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 57A
Update type: Important
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office Word 2007 that could
allow arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified file is opened. This
update resolves that vulnerability.

Hope you know that you posted twice.....

That's it for the code?

Try downloading the update manually and run it. See if you get any errors.

Thanks, Engel. Evidently he posted the same thing using
two different accounts and didn't realize they would both
end up in the same newsgroup. ; )

Thank you for your replies Robert / Engel.

I had a look at the article. I wonder if my problem is related to having
multiple users setup on the PC. I also use Norton Internet security 2008.
The article mentions Xp but I use Vista.
Can you advise me which of the solutions they list in the article to try?

Thanks for your help. I hope to resolve this ASAP.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687#appliesto

I see no mention of an OS dependency in that list.

> Can you advise me which of the solutions they list in the article to try?

Well, since your code mentions a registry key

<quote>
Error 1402: Setup cannot open Registry Key
</quote>

why don't you try the one that deals with permissions first?

Otherwise take a look at your install log for some *context*
about your code (1402) for more clues.

Another approach to diagnosing the cause and hence getting
a better idea of an appropriate resolution would be to Run...
ProcMon to supplement whatever diagnostics you are getting.

Then you might have better luck posting in that other
newsgroup I cross-posted my reply to... ; }

Good luck

Robert,

I hope it's OK with you if I ask several questions before I proceed:

1) Where can I find the install log?
2) You mention a diagnosis tool called ProcMon. Is that part of Vista?
Where do I find this tool?
3) When following the several methods in the article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687#appliesto ,
do I follow the instructions relating to Office XP? I have Office 2007...
4) The article talks about "WebRoot Spysweeper". Are these just examples,
as I am not aware that
I have these. I use Norton.
5) When you suggest I look at the permissions, do you mean the file
permissions in Method 4 in the article or registery permissions in the
pervious methods?

I apologise for asking all these question... I much appreciate your help and
advise.
Regards RL1.

On your harddrive. Usually it has the name of the update with an
extension of .log. In order to make sure I don't miss something
what I do is search all files which have changed that day, sort them
by Date Modified, hence sort them by timestamp, and then scroll
to the minute that the update was run. Then you would find the
update's install log that way. ; )

> 2) You mention a diagnosis tool called ProcMon. Is that part of Vista?

It's a download from TechNet, originally produced by a company
called SysInternals which was bought by Microsoft.

I don't know. That's an example of why I started the cross-post. ; }

> 4) The article talks about "WebRoot Spysweeper". Are these just examples,

Probably. Aka interfering third-party programs. Norton has been
called that too.

> 5) When you suggest I look at the permissions, do you mean the file

A discrepancy in either could prevent an update from completing.
ProcMon can help make clear which file or key was the specific problem,
when the install log doesn't provide sufficient clues.
