On your harddrive. Usually it has the name of the update with an
extension of .log. In order to make sure I don't miss something
what I do is search all files which have changed that day, sort them
by Date Modified, hence sort them by timestamp, and then scroll
to the minute that the update was run. Then you would find the
update's install log that way. ; )

It's a download from TechNet, originally produced by a company
called SysInternals which was bought by Microsoft.

Probably. Aka interfering third-party programs. Norton has been
called that too.

A discrepancy in either could prevent an update from completing.
ProcMon can help make clear which file or key was the specific problem,
when the install log doesn't provide sufficient clues.
