Having the same problem as many others on the forum. As requested by PA
Bear, I'm starting an individual post.

This update fails every time I have tried to install it via update page. I
have followed all your links/suggestions on previous posts and nothing seems
to work.

I have Windows XP, Media Center Edition SP 3 installed, with no previous
problems. I do not use automatic install updates as I like to know what is
going on with my computer. However, I do use the update site to install the
updates. I do not manually install them.

When following info about this update, it is from 2005.

If it's not necessary, then how do I get rid of the icon on the toolbar that
says update needed?

My computer setup matches yours - Found via Google the following explanation
for the Error Code I copied for my 3 Install failures:

0x8007F06B STATUS_SP_VERSION_GREATER
Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is
newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install
this update.

I Do Not Know How to tell "Auto Updates" (set to "Notify But Don't Install")
that I Don't Need this Update. Keep checking the various Forums as somebody
will solve this.

Between this and the error code details you supplied in the other thread
when I challenged you, we may get a full symptom description from you yet.

I'm having the exact same problem with my system. Running MCE2005 and
having the same problems, just after the upgrade to SP3. Is anyone aware of
a way to fix this issue. It seems the update was addressed in the SP3
update, but nobody bothered to tell Windows Update (or MS Update) that it was
resolved. I've tried both MS Update and Windows Update, and the download
failes with each. I went directly to the KB to download the update as a
standalone, and I got the same response as stated above, "0x8007F06B
STATUS_SP_VERSION_GREATER
Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is
newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install
this update."

Any assistance would be appreciated.

David.

Same problem here on my Windows Media Center XP. Who's checking this stuff
for errors before it gets rolled out to the public?

I am in the same boat with you Norm! I decided to sign onto this thread in
the hope that a fix might be found.

I hear ya simssk, That little icon will drive ya nuts. I have tried 4 times
to get the update and just now found this thread that says it isn't
important. At least I now know that much now. I seriously hope someone
figures out how to get windows update to "overlook" this update..... SOON!

Select the Install icon in the toolbar-
Then select custom install and Deselect the update -
Hit close and the update request should not show up again until you "Restore
Hidden Updates" at the Microsoft Update Site.

Yup, I tried that, but the button was greyed out for some reason. So I could
not select it to hide it from auto updates.
