failed sp2

Did a recovery, got something like 38 or 39 updates from the web.
Then tried twice to download sp2, failed both times.
I even repeated the recovery.
Ordered the sp2 disk, same story. Same error message, "Access
denied."
This always happens very far into the process judging from the amount
of time used up before the error message finally appears, and the
amount of time it takes for the program to uninstall everything.
What would happen if I used the recovery disk again, then used the sp2
disk without any of the updates that would precede it if I connected to
the web?

You receive an "Access is denied" error message when
you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 2
