I removed the failed update kb935839 in add/remove programs then attempted to
update again from windows update. The update kb935839 failed again. I want my
laptop to be current in updates. What can I do to fix this problem myself
without spending money I don't have as an unemployed student with no source
of income?

Since this is a Security update:

I ran into this on a machine re-build. Here's what I did to fix it. Once I
got it working, it seems reasonable. You may need to tweek it a little for
different OS, but the idea is good.

KB935839 and KB935839 Fail to load
1) Set up a directory, like c:\temp\patches
2) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/S...displaylang=en
3) enter kb935839 into search window
4) Security Update for Windows XP (KB935839)
5) Click download
6) click save
7) Repeat steps 2-6 but for the KB935840 value
8) close internet and all other windows
9) disconnect network
10) completely disable your virus protection system.
11) go to your temp directory and run the 39 file, then reboot
12) do step 11 for the 40 file.
That should do it. Restart your virus system and network. Check for any
other updates.

Excellent post, Steven. One thing I'd add would be a slightly more
desciptive name for the .exe's in steps 11 & 12 and include the links to
download the KBs. Then you'd have a *useful* MS Knowledge Base article
on manually installing any updates <w> :

KB935839 - XP [x86], XP [x64], Win 2K, Win 2K3 [x86], Win2K3 [x64]
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...DisplayLang=en

KB935840 - XP [x86], XP [x64], Win 2K, Win 2K3 [x86], Win2K3 [x64]
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...DisplayLang=en

11) go to your temp directory and run WindowsXXXX-KB935839-xXX-ENU.exe,
then reboot
12) do step 11 for WindowsXXXX-KB935840-xXX-ENU.exe ¹

¹ XXXX representing the Version of Windows installed
xXX representing either x86 or x64 version of Windows installed
ENU representing the Lanuage of the OS [in this case, English]

Mind if I publish this on my blog ?

Publish with or without the changes. I wish it would have been out there a
couple days back when I was looking for the answer <G>.
As for the specific KB links, I left them off intentially because they are
different for different OS. I thought is I left them open, someone would
actually try to evaluate it per their OS, while if I gave a full like we
would have WK2000 trying to load to Vista. Both approaches have goods and
'others'.
Glad I could help.
