Deleting the file Flash.ocx worked, but had to restart to remove update
notice icon.

I wish they'd fix this update so this wouldn't happen period.

To try to fix the problem, Microsoft insists on using their Explorer.
I'm a satisfied Firefox user, so I refuse.
We'll see where this ends...

Not really.
Just click this link :

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...ShockwaveFlash

The web page will detect the browser and offer the latest, "secure"
FlashPlayer.

Pardon my interpolation, but when I try that link, IE (6, sp1) opens the
download page, but when I click on the 'install' button, IE hangs. It's
possible to close the window, but IE is still chugging along. As can be
seen from Wintop, or by trying to shutdown. It's possible that I have the
security settings too tight, but I wouldn't have thought so. OS is W98SE,
perhaps that's a problem.

I'd much rather be able to download an executable and install it under more
controlled conditions than hooked up via dial-up. Any suggestions would be
welcome.

Thanks,
Joe

I found out that although the Adobe system check analised I had Flash 8.0.22.0,
I really had no flash player at all.
Downloading and installing the full 8.0.24 version was a matter of seconds,
using Firefox om the given link to Adobe, after that the automatic update
could download and install KB913433.
Problem solved, thank you.

Regrettingly, a few days later I notice that Microsoft automatic update is
still trying to install KB913433, so my problem is not solved at all, see if
I can skip one update, without quitting the whole system of automatic updates.
