There have been a few questions as to what to do if updates have failed. This was my experience.
1) Tried to install critical updates from my IE browser - all 5 failed to install.
2) Launced the browser again - still had 5 updates. Decided to download the .exe files to my hard drive. Installed each one with no problems.
*Note - you can do this by adding the update to install as usual, but before going to the last step click on the link read more. Follow the links there to download the file for your version of windows.
