Failed Updates Since July this year...

Hi! I was under the impression that Automatic Updates takes care of it all -
however, when reviewing my update history recetrnly I found that all my
Automatic updates from around July/August this year has failed.

Two things remain suspicious and constant in my problem it seems:
One is that I have blocked "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool
(KB892130)" due to privacy concerns and the concerns around it blocking old
software packages I have bought during Windows '95 times, which I still
wanted to be able to run on the computer.

Two is that when I shut my computer down it says that it is installing two
updates which fails every time, like clockwork and those are something like
"Security update for .NET Framework 1.1" and "Security Updatre for .NET
Framework 2.0".

I had hoped that this would sort-of fix itself by now but it clearly hasn't
and I'm concerned that I am driving a very suspect Wndows install!

I have a current version of Norton Internet security running on this
computer but am not sure if that's good enough - I would guess not.

Please help!

Cheers

Kartsie

I shall assume we're talking about WinXP SP2 here.

You don't need 892130 installed to be able to update via Automatic Updates.
To use Windows Update website, it must be installed.

As for the two .NET Framework updates, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 (feel free to ignore the title).

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG
Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before attempting
to install the update(s).

=======================================

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from
Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no-charge for
support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call,
clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the
update's KB number (e.g., KB931678).

In other countries, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default...r=securityhome > "No-Charge
Support...for virus and other security-related" issues in right-hand menu
for localized contact information.

Hi PA Bear!

Thansk for your info - the tip around the security software definitely
helped and it seems that those two .NET Framework related patched have been
applied. The bugger is that it still seems like Automatic Updates are still
not running, yet.

Thanks again for your advice - any ideas how to get Automatic Updates
running again?

Cheers

Hi Remy,

Please check your Windows Security Center -

Frequently asked questions about Windows Security Center:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883792

If the alerts are to do with your anti virus software you may need to post to a more
appropriate newsgroup.

Windows XP Newsgroups
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ewsgroups.mspx

On the other hand, if it indicates that your automatic update system is off then -

HOW TO: Configure and Use Automatic Updates in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

If my guesses are entirely off the mark, then please read -
How to ask a question: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375
Then start your own thread on the Newsgroup which is most appropriate to your needs.

Ahh...those updates are not nessacary in your case (especially the
validation tool it crashes the PC). Go to START>WINDOWS UPDATE>custom>find
those updates>+>DO NOT ALERT ME ABOUT THESE UPDATES AGAIN. Automatic Updates
is only for Critical updates.
