Hi! I have a genuine version of Windows XP, but am unable to install any
updates. The amount of information this group provides is so overwhelming
that if someone could just point me in the right direction, I would
appreciate it!

I have inserted below the output from running the MGADiag application.

Thanks so much!

Try (ignore title): -
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

If no joy, report back with further details, for example error codes.

The validation issue can be caused by several factors, such as incorrect
local system settings or an incorrect Product Key. The troubleshooting
process can be time consuming, but please be assured that I will continue to
assist through the course of this case.

Before moving on, please let me know if you have visited the Microsoft
Genuine Advantage (MGA) Diagnostic webpage located at the address below:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

On the above website, we can test some system settings and confirm that
there are no Internet Explorer (IE) settings or other factors blocking the
validation process.

Note: We can enable Automatic Update to get updates!!!

Best Regards,

Calven

Hi! I'd like to thank all of you for helping me resolve this problem with
Windows Automatic Updates not installing. I ran the diagnostics tools that
Calvin provided the link for. All of the Internet Explorer options PASSED
and both Windows XP and Office apps were validated successfully. I wanted to
also let you know that I manually installed the 47 updates that had been
pending, but failed to install previously. As future updates become
available, I will just have to wait and see if the solutions you provided
fixed the problem...

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted!!!

This error is most likely caused by one of the following conditions:

1. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.
2. Windows Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.

We can perform the following steps to troubleshoot this issue. After trying
each suggestion, please go to the Windows Update site to check the result.
Thanks for your cooperation.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service.
If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet
or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet
connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I
recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the
Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again after
completing the update process.

Suggestion 1: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder
===========================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the open window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the open folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the open window.

Net start WuAuServ

Suggestion 2: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
======================================
1. Visit the following link and download Windows Update Agent 3.0 to the C:\
(Choose Save, click My Computer on left panel, Click C:\, Click Open and
Click Save)

http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x86.exe

2. Click Start, Click Run and copy the following command to the panel:

C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

Note: There is a space between "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and
"/wuforce".

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Calven

I am unable to run "net stop wuauserv". I get an "access denied" message.
This happens in safe mode, in the administrator account, and in a new account
with administrator privledges that I created. I am unable to run the updater
install with the "/wuforce" parameter either, with error message "Windows
update Agent Installer failed with the following error number 0x80070005"
This occurred after a repair reinstallation of XP sp2.
