Failed validation after update

When I retrieve the latest updates vista tells me first that not all updates
could be installed. When the system reboots the computer only shows a sign
that says that an illegal change was made. It also tells me that my version
of vista is invalid. When i reset my sysyem to yesterdays settings everything
is find and i am able to validate my vista version but as soon as the system
updates the problem is back. I have a pre-installed vista version that came
with a Hewlett Packard computer so there is no way that the version is false.

<cmd_output OS="XPsp2"
E:\>set /a c = 0x426
1062
E:\>net helpmsg %c%

The service has not been started.
</cmd_output>

I wonder what service that would be? ; )

Similarly, the 0x80070002 codes below mean the file is not found
but it may also mean that it couldn't be loaded because it was missing
a dependency.

I would also try using filever /v dnsapi.dll to try to get some more clues
about its "file mismatch". E.g. was it one of the files the update replaced?
Was it replaced? Etc.

Cross-posting to a Vista NG since I don't use Vista.

Can indicate that Vista's Software Licensing service didn't start. Open an
elevated command prompt, try:

net start slsvc.exe

Also, run services.msc and make sure that service is set to automatic. It
may help to set the first failure option to restart the service.
