I cannot get Windows Update to work. This all began with some windows
updates before April 15th. Updates downloaded without notifying me and
Service Pak 2 updates were downloaded which my computer did not have at the
time. I have Windows XP Professional which came to me in Nov. 04 with Service
Pak 1.
After the download there were a number of problems with my computer and I
took it to the Geek Squad at our local Best Buy store..
They added Service Pak 2 and all other issues were solved by them BUT I
still cannot get access to the Windows updates. I keep getting this error
code..0x80072EFD. I contacted a support person received an answer with some
resolutions none of which have worked..
I have Norton Internet Security which I disabled and tried to access the
site but it did not work...
I am no computer wizard.... lol...Can someone please help?

JAW,

See if anything in this step by step tutorial helps to resolve the
issue: http://castlecops.com/postlite106642-bits.html
NIS has most likely damaged BITS as the 0x80072EFD error code is
explained here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Thank you. I went and looked at the sight and I am not sure whether to try it
or not. I am not confident in my abilities to do stuff like that..I have
tried just about everything else. Have been on the computer trying things all
day.
I went to add the update sites address to the trusted zone in Internet
Options and there is an entry there *.0.0.0.0 and no matter how many times
I remove it, it comes back.. Anyone know what that is?

Having that entry is quite abnormal, and points to a highly likely malware issue.

You are highly urged to follow the steps at
"The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol"
<http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm>

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Security

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

Make sure this system is malware free. Then post back if still having a problem.

Maurice,
Thank you very much for this information.. I will be checking all this out.
I still have that entry in the web sites box.
RE: The failed Windows updates issue, Error number 0x80072EFD. I followed
the following procedure sent to me by a Microsoft tech and IT WORKED.. I am
now able to get Updates from Windows Updates... Below is what I did...

Suggestion 2: Reset the proxy list (and bypass list)
===============================
This issue can occur if the proxy has not been configured correctly. Let's
first reset the proxy list.

Note: If any proxy is necessary to the Internet connection, please contact
your ISP (Internet Service Provider) before using the following commands to
remove the configuration.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.

4. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

proxycfg -u
proxycfg -d
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

After finishing these steps, please go to the Windows Update site to check
the issue again. If the issue still persists, we can try the following
suggestion.
