Failing Updates

My OS is XP Pro.
I'm having trouble with updates failing to install. i.e. The following
updates were not installed: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool
(KB892130). I've been through Article ID 822798, but still I'm having
problems with Windows Update. Can anyone tell me what is going on? And how
to solve this aggravation?

Try download and install the recent version of KB892130 manually:
http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...5f8eef14aa.exe

If even that one fails, follow the steps mentioned in
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/Support.aspx

Maybe you've running a 3rd party firewall and/or antivirus software
preventing the installation of KB892130 properly.

Hi I am having the same issue in addition to other updates failing as well. I
keeping getting an error that says windows has detected an unknown signature
on some of the updates and downloads as well. how do I fix or get around
this? It is preventing me from downloading any anti-virus software as well.
So any help would be great.

The manual installation of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool worked
for that particular install and I'm no longer prompted to install it first.
However, when I select updates in Windows Update, I'm still getting "The
following updates were not installed: <Listing of updates I had selected>."
I tried turning off my spyware (Ad-Aware Ad-Watch) and antivirus (Avast) to
no avail. Also I successfully validated Windows. Ideas?

That's another issue. Make sure the "Cryptographic Service" is running
(Start -> Run -> Services.msc [Enter key]).

Which error code is displayed for those failing updates?
Check the Windows Update site and follow the "Update History" link
on the left side there. Now click on the red cross in the Status
column. You shold see the error code there. Please copy and paste
that one into your next reply.

Furthermore, please add the *last* 30-40 lines of the "windowsupdate.log"
file sitting in the Windows folder.

I went in and tried the both of the links you sent to this question. The
first failed so I tried the second. Everything passed the validation. But
when I go in to DL any updates it is still coming back with an unknown
signature and windows will not let it through. I am not very good with
windows so any help would be great. Thank you.

HI on the cryptographic service would this prevent other programs from being
downloaded as well? I am trying to download AVG anti-virus and it will not
allow it to go through. The whole unknown signiture keeps coming up just like
on some of the updates with windows.

And yes it is running.

In case they transfer encrypted/signed files, yes.
Have you checked the service is up and running in the meantime?
