I have had problems installing SP3 on my HP AMD Athalon computer. I have
worked day and night into the wee hours trying to undo all the damage. This
began on a Monday. On Thursday, I received an email newsgram from HP (I
signed up for them when I purchased my machine) saying the following:
CAUTION: If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario
desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup
problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update).
Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3
Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors .
It would be nice if these companies (Microsoft, Hewlett Packard in this
case) would talk to each other so that they can let us know when their
products won't be compatible. But what do they care as long as we keep
forking out the dough.
I see that there is no loss of interest on this website. Even the Microsoft
agent I contacted seemed at a loss with the symptoms my computer was having.
I thought I had a virus. I don't. Some other posters here mentioned getting
a Mac. I'm on my 3rd PC and a Mac is starting to sound worthy of trying out
because these time-consuming headaches (remember, computers are supposed to
save us time) are getting to be a burden. By the time you weed through all
the "help" you can't see straight. It's just too much information. Computers
shouldn't be this complicated. Remember typewriters? Yeah, I long for those
days again.
What do you get for posting your frustrations/questions? You get smart-ass
remarks and disrespect from people who don't understand what you've been
through because they have had the computer training that the average person
has not. They add insult to injury. They should be ashamed of themselves.
