Fails to update

I have 19 critical updates which have all downloaded. When I go back into
update the eggtimer screen says "preparing to download" for a couple of
minutes and then reports "failed". The prior screen says download size is
nil so I think the file has already been received.

The error report I get is FFFFFDFD which is listed in the Microsoft error
lists for this system but there is no link to what to do!

Any help gratefully received!
