Failure to finish searching my computer

For several months now, whenever I try to use Windows Update, the process
goes to the step of "searching your computer for updates [or something like
that]" and it never completes the search. My guess is that if I hadn't just
stopped the process and gone on to other things on the Internet, it would
still be "searching" after 2 months! Why does Windows Update not complete
the search, and what can I do to get it to work properly?

I have a fresh XPSP2 system that is doing the same thing...Automatic Updates
appears to somehwat work if you leave if connected forever, but you can
initiate Microsoft Updates, it just 'checks' forever.

Anyone?
