PC that is barely 1 month old running Windows Media Center Edition XP SP2
that was up to date with patches except for the October release. System
pulled down the windows updates last night, all installed except the
BK922770. The error in the event log now points that there is an issue with
the Windows Installer Service. Since the other updates installed, something
in the updates has caused the installer service to no longer function. Tried
re-regserver of the msiexec service. That did not help. Tried running the
..Net cleanup utility to remove .NET 2.0 (as listed in another post). Still
did not solve the problem. Tried re-registering and re-installing Windows
Installer 3.1, still no luck.
Basically to the point where I am going to have to do a repaired install of
windows to hopefully get the system back to where it was before.

I have same problem. Does re-installing .net frameworks affect in games or
other programs?

This also failed to install on one of my machines (Windows 2000). It turned
out that in that case there was not enough space to apply the patch. While
the patch is only 2.2MB, it requires over 150MB of temporary free space to
apply...

Be more specific? What utility? What happened with it?

Some threads (with varying levels of conditionality about whether
the uninstall would have worked or not) suggest using this tool:

I have the same problem, but I noticed on the update page that the file to be
downloaded has a zero kb file size!(Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes
(Downloaded; ready to install)
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise your Windows-based system running the Microsoft .NET Framework and
gain access to restricted data. You can help protect your computer by
installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may
have to restart your computer. Details...) . dont know if this has anything
to do with the problem.
