Failure to install MS software

Hi there. I've been trying to install the latest IE7, but to no avail, I have
been continually receiving install errors which I just put down to the Beta.
Today I just tried an update and install Net Framework 1.1, and it failed to
install too. Now I'm concerned that there's something bigger going on.

Here's a little history. Nothing really different has been done on the
machine recently apart from uninstalling Net Framework 2 in an attempt to
install 1.1 in it's place - this was a suggested fix for the XBox 360 not
seeing the Windows Media Connect on the PC. I was also using the previous
version of IE7 Beta on this machine but uninstalled it prior to attempting
the first install of the latest version - Both these uninstalls were
successful.

I've followed some similar threads which claim that the problem is down to
registry keys which can't be accessed. Using RegMon and rerunning the IE7
install, there seem to be a few under HKLM-SYSTEM-CurrentControlSet-Enum and
HKLM-SYSTEM-CurrentControlSet-Control that are read only.

My startup runs independantly of Windows Startup so I can easily stop the
batch file from launching all my apps. I did this, killed any processes that
are not Windows, and retried the install. Still nothing.

It's all rather strange as I've installed updates and new MS software before
without a problem, and the Genuine Tool and validation is all okay.

Here's the error from the Net 1.1 update:
Error Code: 0x643

Here's some errors from the IE7 install:
11.563: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11873, RegOpenKeyEx failed with
error 0x2
11.563: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11905, RegOpenKeyEx failed with
error 0x2
....89.735: LoadFileQueues: UpdSpGetSourceFileLocation for halaacpi.dll
failed: 0xe0000102
....126.703: DoRegistryUpdates:UpdSpInstallFromInfSection Failed for
ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install error: 0x5
126.703: INF_REGISTRY Failed
126.703: DoInstallationoRegistryUpdates failed
126.782: Access is denied.
....196.516: Software Update Rollback has completed with return code 0xbc2.
This rollback requires a reboot.
....196.532: Update.exe extended error code = 0x5

Any advice, help?

I had the same problem with each IE7 update, except the latest 7.0.5700.6.
This should answer your problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925. I
have to use method 2.

Many thanks for that FrankV. I've already had a crack at that one and there's
nothing in the ie7.log that says "IECUSTOM: Key is still unwriteable".

That's what prompted me to look around and try and discover the unwriteable
key. Oh, and I've tried resetting the permissions and setting the advanced
option of setting all the child keys too. That didn't work.

Any other thoughts?

Since that fixed it for me I haven't thought about any other way. Usually
when something works I don't try to go any further. Although I did go
somewhat further than the MS instructions. Since I am the only user I
changed permissions to the 5 main keys to full control and read which means
all child keys should have it. Did you try that?

Yep, I did that and I get the error saying that some of the child elements
cannot be changed, this happened for a couple of the top level keys.

It's strange because I am marked as a Computer Administrator.
