Suggestion:-
Use one of the MSOFFICE products, and click on the Office Online link.
Download and install Service Pack 2 from there. That worked for me.

From the Automatic download it failed to install twice on the desktop and
once on the laptop. From the Windowsupdate site, failed twice on each machine.
From Office online it installed on both machines effortlessly.

I hope this helps for you.

A couple of possibilities

1) Use Detect & Repair from the Help menu of any of the Office programs or
2) Do a repair install from the original CD.

Then apply SP2.

The second technique was the one I used successfully.

Cheers, Peter.

I decided to uninstall office 2003. I removed all registry entries and
reinstalled Office.
It has updated perfectly. So, you may want to try this. I made a ghost
backup image befroe i tried it.
It worked for me.
I downloaded the file suggested by rac and that was that.
Good luck to all of you

My install failed through the Office Online Update also...but then it gives
you a list of solutions...and one of them is to download the larger file so
you don't need to use your Office CD...by downloading the larger file, which
is something like 90mb, I was able to successfully install...hope this helps.

I tried to install Office 2003 update as you suggested via Office online,
that has also failed several times. I cannot access the "failed report" for
advice and the "install" option comes on everytime I boot up - it just won't
install. Any other ideas?
Thanks

In the "Updates failed to install" thread in this forum RC suggested:

"get your original office 2003 CD out, and go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

at the very bottom, you will see Office2003SP2-KB887616-FullFile-ENU.exe
then download this. "

I and others have had this work successfully. You'll just need to dig out
your office cd.

Good luck!

Well ... nobody's gonna like this. I tracked down the fault causing the 0x51F
error on the laptop. It was caused by the absence of a .CAB file that was
required by the update. The same error had a different cause on the tower
(embarrassingly the CD was in the wrong drawer). The solution to this problem
was to use control panel to add or delete programs, and then reinstall the MS
Office suite completely on the laptop, and to log in the CD properly on the
tower.

Before you go to all this trouble, boot up one of the MS Office programs, go
to the help menu and click on detect and repair. If that runs properly, then
it's not the same problem. OTOH if detect and repair baulks, then this will
probably fix it.

The other method is to download the entire fullfile from Office online
downloads, and use that, but it's about 90 MB long.
