Hello Pat,

Following is from Windows Update Troubleshooter:
Suggestion 1:

This error can occur if you have mapped network drives configured and you don't have the correct permissions to access them. Try disconnecting all mapped network drives and then try accessing the Windows Update site and see if the installs still fail.

Suggestion 2:

If you are using the NTFS file system on your hard drive(s) then try these steps.

Check permissions on the C:\WUTemp folder (if you have more than one hard drive, check this folder on each drive).

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to the C:\WUTemp folder.
3. Right-click on the folder name and select Properties from the popup menu.
4. Click on the Security tab.
5. Set Full Control access for the following accounts:

Users
Power Users
Administrators

6. Click Apply, then OK.
7. Now try accessing the Windows Update site.

Suggestion 3:

1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGEDIT" (w/o the quotes). The Registry Editor will open.

*WARNING*

Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

2. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate

3. On the upper menu, click on Edit, and select Permissions from the drop-down list.
4. Give Administrator (And / Or System) Full Control and Read permissions by checking the allow boxes.
NOTE: In certain instances these boxes are grayed out. Insure that all accounts have appropriate permissions.
5. Click Apply, then OK.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
7. If you had to make any changes, then try the Windows Update site and see if the error persists.

Issue Applies To:
Windows XP

<q>

If no joy, post back with Windows version, and a copy of today's windowsupdate.log --- but just the entries for the fail date.

It is crucially important to tell us which update it was.
If it was update 905474, then this might help:

A problem with registry key permissions may cause the installation of
KB905474 to fail.

These permissions can be repaired using Registry Editor as follows:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissions..
6. Ensure that group Administrators allowed Full Control permission
7. Ensure that username SYSTEM allowed Full Control permission
8. Repeat steps 3-6 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1

I also got this error on 14 updates. I recently bought a new desktop and the
store installed all the windows updates before giving me the computer. Of 54
updates 14 failed with the 0x80070005 error.

When I check the update site on how to fix this they say go to add/remove
programs in control panel and uninstall them then run update again to
reinstall them.

The problem is they are not showing in the add/remove program list.

What can I do to reinstall these updates?

The ones that failed are KB911562, KB911565, KB912812, KB908531, KB910393,
KB911927, KB910437, KB900725, KB905749, KB905414, KB896423, KB890859,
KB890046, KB899587

P.S. I notice there is an uninstall folder in the windows directory for each
of these but I am a little worried about running anything in these folders. I
don't want to corrupt my system.

The permission boxes are greyed out but with ticks in the appropriate boxes
is this correct?

Jim,

Which boxes located where, please? since my note mentioned 2 different places.
State which version of Windows you have & the specific update that failed.

My apologies to all. If your system is on Version 6 of Windows Update, disregard my last note about folder "WUTEMP".

Version 6 uses the folder C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

(Note your system may have Windows folder named WINNT and that it may be located in other than C [if using multi-boot setup]).
