FATAL: Failed to get agent interface pointers, hr=80004002

I have 300 machines working and 3 failing with the above error.

The clients are Windows XP Sp2
The server is on Windows 2000 Sp4

The machines have registered with the server and downloaded updates but will
not install. Initially they failed with
FATAL: Failed to get session from datastore, error = 0x80004002
FATAL: Failed to Unserialize from data store, error = 0x80004002
# WARNING: Exit code = 0x80004002

I then manually reinstalled windows update on the client side.

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%systemroot%\inf\au.inf

Now every time the client checks in with the server I get

UClnt Launched Client UI process
AUClnt FATAL: Failed to get agent interface pointers, hr=80004002
AU setting pending client directive to 'Install Approval'

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Chris, It's likely you are using WSUS.
Be advised that WSUS issues should be posted to the newsgroup
microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services
