Fatal system crash caused by Auto Update overnight

Greeted by a blue screen first thing this morning. I was first tipped off by
another PC in my home running XP Home, also with fatal system crash during
the night. HP tech support confirmed, something must have been written over,
possibly corrupting administrator account. Had to perform "cold restart" to
unlock. On their recommendation, now doing defrag, chkdsk, virus update and
scan, in that order.
