Favicon don't show on desktop

If I create a shortcut to a website on the Vista desktop and the site has a
favicon (yahoo, google, disney, pbskids, etc) the icon shows up as the IE
icon and not the favicon. On my XP pc the favicon shows on the desktop. When
I right click the shortcut and go into properties the favicon shows, it also
shows in the favorites folder, but not on the desktop.

The reason i matter to me is that my daughter can't read yet and she needs
the favicons to help her navigate.

I was able to do a temporary fix by going into the temp internet files and
finding them and then saving them to a folder in Documents and then pointing
the shortcut to it.

But is there just some setting that needs to be enabled for Vista to show
these on the desktop?

Using FavOrg 1.4 may help. It makes favicons persistent. I have not used
it ever since IE7 came out, as it is a bit better with favicons, so I do not
remember if it works with favourites outside the default folder.

Mine work. I just create a New Shortcut to the site rather than using one
from Favorites. I also open in Kiosk Mode for my Daughter so it has no menu
bars. I find it is a lot easier for her to navigate. Remove the -k if you
don't want kiosk mode.

Create a shortcut to

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -k
http://www.boohbah.com/zone.html

This is Boohbah but you just change the URL.

So, you create a normal shortcut instead of a internet shortcut. Very
clever.
But it's still interesting to know why the other (normal) method did not
work.
I tried FavOrg and that seemed to help, but the icons are not persistent.
They come and go as they please.

Kind regards
Thomas

I just thought - maybe favicons do not show up on the desktop anymore, as IE
runs in its own user space when using UAC. We should count ourselves lucky
that we can at least drag the shortcut from the address bar to the desktop,
I suppose.

I found a great blog post that mentions that if you drag-and-drop a URL
to the desktop to create a shortcut, the favicon does not work. But if
you right-click on the page and choose "create shortcut", it does.

Favicons will only show in "classic icons" view, not medium or large
icons.

Thanks for this info. In a previous post, I was trying to find out why
dragging and dropping to the Quick Launch bar wasn't bringing the favicon
(as it did on my XP machine), and had relegated myself to actually
downloading the favicon from the target website, copying the favicon to a
folder set up for that purpose, and changing the icon on the QL bar to that
favicon.

It works, but it has extra steps.

Your method of right-clicking and creating a shortcut on the desktop works
nicely. And after doing that, you can move that shortcut to your QL bar.

Good to know.
