The fax cum Picture Viewer which XP had, has disappeared. But
discussions on the subject, led me to a so-called Gadget Fax cum Picture
Viewer (in beta version) for the Sidebar on the web-page of
I T Pro. I downloaded and installed it but it does not open. So I
guess, it was a flop.
But why has Microsoft not bothered to adapt and retain a useful too
like the Viewer for Vista?

Because it would confuse J. Typical User to have both the old-style
fax and picture viewer and the new, spiffy Windows Photo Gallery
(try the Live version).

I believe it is because they removed the Fax functionality - except if you
get Vista Business. Personally, I liked having the ability to fax from
Windows in XP.

Let this forum know if this helps or if you figure out the problem, so
others can benefit. As far as I know the "notify me of replies"
does not work, so do not count on this feature.

Yes, indeed. You are right. When I tried to find the Applications associated
with file extension jpg, I got two Microsoft PhotoEditors , both having the
same icon identity. Firstly, the name itself was misleading; so I did not
even open and check its functionality. But when I did for both the icons
mentioned above, I found that one Photo Editor was just like the old MS Paint
and the second was MS Paint PLUS the Viewer which permits me to see all the
files in a folder sequentially.
Since the PhotoEditor cum Viewer fulfills both the functions, is it possible
for me to remove the Paint successor from the List, so that I or any other
user do not keep fiddling to find out which one to use? Or can I at least
change the icon for one of them?
And what happened to the feature of XP which permitted the User to see all
the file extensions and associated programs and change the icons or
associations, if he so desired?
