Fax won't transmit

I have a new Acer desktop that came with Vista Home Premium, and Agere (now
LSI) PCI soft modem with the latest drivers. I tried sending a fax using
BVRP Classic Phone Tools as well as the fax software that comes with the
Brother MFC 420CN printer. There's a dial tone, it initializes, it dials,
but it doesn't transmit. I tested the fax number from a regular fax machine
and it's a good number and never busy. The modem diagnostics identifies the
modem and says "success". Any suggestions besides installing another modem?

Nothing better than FaxTalk Pro (faxtalk.com).
A direct descendant of venerable Symantec WinFaxPro and before that -
Delrina faxpro from as long ago as early 1990's (if not older).
The thing that keeps on survivign for 20years. That actually landed by
first job (remember when Fax was still used to submiut Resumes, and still
used because it's spam-proof unlike email & it's hardcopy paper so hard to
ignore unlike email!).

If you want Fax, I recommend FaxTalkPro.

I had the same problem with mine, turned out I had the phone lines going IN
and OUT backwards. Once I switch them going in and out of the machine it
worked fine.

Ah ! That could be why he's using a dial-up modem, presumably a fax
enabled one and presumably not with a dial-up Internet connection
running on the same telephone line.

Old BVRP program not compatable with Vista/7. See Avanquest site.

I'll check it out - what about the Brother 420CN fax - it's the vista
version.

I thought you might be using an old version of BVRP. Current version OK as
long as you also have MS Office (who knows why). Plug a phone into the line
and make sure there's no interference. Modern faxes are very sensitive. Make
sure the modem settings are Data Bits 8, Parity None and Stop Bits 1. Try
using pulse rather than tone dialing. also although speed automatically
lowers, select something below 14,400 just to be sure handshaking is working.
One final thought; modem should be on COM3.
