Feb 13th 2002 MSMXL 4.0

I installed security update Feb 13th 2002 MSMXL 4.0 and cumulative security
update for outlook express 6 sp1 KB823353 on 26th Dec 2004 and since then my
PC keeps freezing every time I go on to the internet or try using a CD. I
can't think why I wasn't given this security update before as I update
regularly and get automatic update notifications. I am using windows 98
second edition and run outlook express 6. Should I have installed the MSMXL
pack? It did mention outlook express 6 users had a security risk or is my
operating system too basic for it.

Any help much appreciated

Hi, Carol;

First, go to Add&Remove Programs and remove that MSXML package. Then
download and install these two updates (one for version 3 and one for
version 4):

You most likely already have it, but if not you will need to get version 2.0
of the MS Installer. Links for that are listed on both the above pages.

Second, not sure why your Win98 system got the KB823353 update pushed to it.
The MS security bulletin and manual download page for that update don't show
it as "critical" for Win98 systems; and I can't find it on the WU Catalog
site for 9x systems. You may want to uninstall that one and see if the
issues clear up.

Meanwhile, I'd recommend you install a 3rd party firewall if you don't have
one already, and follow other suggestions for making your system more

Hi Sky

Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately I can't find a way to uninstall the
update MSMXL as it doesn't show on my add/remove programs and I see that on
the MS website is says once installed it can't be uninstalled again.

I wonder if you or anyone else have any other ideas. I fear I might need to
start from scratch and do a total reboot. I do have an addition hard drive I
can copy vital documents/programs to and have done this before when I had
corrupted software. If there are any other possibilities I'd love to hear
them. This is something I'm going to have to come back to after New Year as
I've now got family commitments like the rest of us.
