A few questions about moving personal folders

Hi,

PLease could someone help with these questions?

I want to move all the User\ files to a separate drive but am making a bit
of a mess of it! As I understand it, the username and vista folders can't
actually be moved but are effectively converted into links towards the new
location?

1. Should I create folders that mirror the account usernames on the D drive
before I change the folders location?

2. Do I have to create a folder called 'Documents', Pictures, etc for the
document files, pictures, etc to go in, or will the relocation automatically
create a folder with the same name as the original?

3. Does this process keep all the account file security?


As a related problem (!) when I messed up first time on this I somehow
managed to 'aquire' THREE links in one of the user account's personal folders
to 'Local Disk (D' ! Right click menu doesn't give me an option to delete!!
Any thoughts as how this can be removed from this place!

For me, I have my users folder moved to a NTFS formatted D drive. Means:
d:\folder\Robert
d:\folder\Sam

In Robert's folder, there's Documents etc etc. Same for Sam.

You can use a different name, instead of the same user name.

If it's a NTFS formatted drive, don't worry about the file security.

Haha, well, it depends on how you create - symbolic links/hard links etc.

But try just deleting the links, just like any normal links. See if this
works? If it doesn't, just restore the links back from the recycle bin

Jabez,

I haven't a clue as to how I created them! All I can see is that there are 3
links to the D drive in my personal folders now and there shouldn't be!
There's no delete option on the right click and highlighting and using the
keyboard does no good either.

also, tried what you said about the naming of folders when you transfer docs
to the D drive...

Can you clear this up for me please...
I created a folder called Files then one called Admin for the admin account.
Redirected the Video folder for this account....then when I tried to move any
other personal folder ( not the first, only subsequent ones) it would only
offer to save it in D:\Files rather than D:\Files\Admin and, regardless of
whether I accepted the D:Files option or added the remainder of the path, any
further folders were automatically put into the Video Folder.

Is this a 'Vista' thing or is something else happening do you think as I'm
used to seeing folders created ctually staying there and not disappearing!
The \admin fold was available the first time....but not after that!

hey Paul,

Can you do a screenshot of the personal folder? With the right click menu?
Cos I could delete the folders on my end...

To fix (hoepfully), try doing the following:

1. Creaet the necessary folders under D:\files (maybe: D:\files\videos,
D:\files\documents etc etc).
2. Start | Run | %userprofile% | Enter
3. Right click Documents and select Properties. Under Location, use
d:\files\documents.
4. Do the same for other folders.
5. Now, move whatever that is already in your D:\files to the correct
folders...

I am not sure why everything will enter your VIdeo folder, but you will need
to rectify it

Hi Jabez,

FIrst, thanks for the advice so far..have got one account sorted and
redirected successfully.

Found this link
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/90...l-folders.html that
gave new folders and desktop.ini too.

Still got these 3 Local D icons though. In Properties and Location the
default path tells me that they were all originally the main Picture folder.
it won't let me restore these to the default path as it's seeing it as a
drive rather than a folder. Any ideas of how to get rid or restore these?
