I now find this suspecious file in C:\Widows\ and NOT in
C:\Windows\System32\. Is this a legitimate file or something detrimental to
my Win XP Pro system?

Are you experiencing problems? The file would normally be located in
C:\Windows\Prefetch. The alg.exe (Application Layer Gateway) process is
part of the internet connection sharing and internet firewall components in
Windows XP.

Have you just installed WinXP SP2? Have you revisited Windows Update since
installing it?
