File associations Lost

I have created 2 file associations. .tiff and .tif, both associated with
Adobe Acrobat Document. Everytime a MS Update is applied, these settings are
blown out and I have to recreate them. Why? What can I do to prevent this?

Windows version? What updates are being installed? Are the same updates
being installed (i.e., all installs fail)?
