Hello,

Since I re-installed my Windows XP home, I receive the "file corrupt"
message everytime I try to install the "Update for Background Intelligent
Transfer Service... KB842773" from either Windows Update or with manually
downloading at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

I also did try the below actions : ---->
1. Stopping "Automatic Update Service" by typing "services.msc" in the run
box.
2. Deleting the contents of both the DataStore, EventCache and Download
folders in my SoftwareDistribution folder. (Cleaning out the Download folder
for WU5)
3. Starting "Automatic Update Service" by typing "services.msc" in the run
box.

It didn't work. I still receive "file corrupt" message when I try to install
KB842773. That also stops me proceeding to SP2 I think or other necessary
updates!!??

Any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks

Have you ran chkdsk and defrag lately?

Sometimes if the HD is not healthy, this can cause a problem.

Have you tried saving the update to for example a flash drive and installing from
there.

Just suggestions.

Try running the "chkdsk /r" command at the command prompt
You will need to open the command prompt by typing "cmd" in start->Run
It will locate bad sectors and recover readable information.

Also see if there are any particular errors in the WU log
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Also check on the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed
update (red mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do a
search for the error code.

Hi foodeng, the only other action is to contact MS - it's free for WU issues.

How to obtain assistance from MS Support
http://support.microsoft.com/
Assisted Support - Get help from a support professional. Support options for your
product could include phone, chat, or e-mail assistance.
Select a product for Assisted Support

I would be interested in any response you get from them regarding this error code.

Re-installed how? Which version? E.g. base or XPsp2?
If the latter you probably don't need the update you are trying to install
and in that case the error message would probably be bogus.

That update was a sort of a bootstrap for XPsp1 users to install
BITS for WUv5 so they could download and install XPsp2.

If you are already using WUv5 my guess is that you already have
the necessary version of BITS installed (if not also active)
and don't need that update.

Well, what versions of the modules that the update documents
do you have installed now?

A simple way of checking and doing other diagnostics for BITS as well
would be to run (in a cmd window):

bitsadmin /util /version /verbose

Good luck

Try some of the other things I suggested?
E.g. XPsp1a may be a base service pack level for you
and you still might have KB842773 (or its equivalent, if any)
as a result of what all else Dell have integrated into your CD.
I'm guessing that your CD is a slipstreamed collection of updates,
not just the base XPsp1a.

No. Your CD is a starting point for the continuum of "all maintenance".
It doesn't really matter where that is because there is always going to be
something else that has to be added separately after that point.

BTW the XP CD contains the XP Support Tools as an optional install.
It includes bitsadmin but I'm not sure whether that level of the tool would
be a useful as the XPsp2 version. I also don't know how compatible
the new version would be in the older OS but it looks as if the option
that I mentioned might only be available in the newer version.
