explorer.exe is locking up after installing the most recent windows xp
security update (KB933729). I've installed it twice with the same results.
The second time I downloaded only that update. Mouse is the only thing that
works. A system restore gets me back up.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I don't, but I'll give you my view on MS updates. I, too, got the
notice for this and 3 or 4 other updates including the monthly
malicious software removal tool. I don't know how really effective
the latter is, but at least it has never hurt me, so I installed
it. No problems. For the others, I did my normal "watchful
waiting" routine looking for comments like yours. One other person
had an IE7 issue with this same update, which doesn't affect me as
I am using IE6. My point is that I tend NOT to immediately install
ANY MS updates for at least a few days until I can peruse the
various support NGs such as this one looking for possible issues.
There were MANY problems with a 9-update run back in August; for
that one, I think I ultimately only installed 6.

So, while I cannot help you now, I might politely suggest to you
and others reading this to consider taking a more conservative
approach and let the early updaters do whatever "beta testing" of
the updates that may be necessary. In any event, good luck in
resolving your issues - if I couldn't get Explorer to run, it would
put a really big dent in my productivity so I can feel your pain.

Is there anything in the Event System log that would provide a clue ?
Perhaps there's a conflict with 3rd party security software.
I'd be curious to see what's in the KB933729.log that's located in %windir%

Go ahead and post it as we'll be looking for ERRORS that should be in a
numerical format. That should be no problem unless they're written
backwards <w>

I came looking for posts on theis update. There seem to be many problems.
It locked up my Outlook 2007 permanently no matter what I tried after I
installed it. Once I deleted it, I had no more issues.

And no, there was no background anti-virus running when I installed it
And my machine is new, fast and more than capable of running Vista and Office
2007.

Just an FYI. I'll be curious to see what MS says about this update in the
near future.
