file explorer select folder on open

Is there a way to select the folder in the navigation pane when you open File
Explorer. I would prefer it not to be pointed at the Start Menu all the
time. I've looked and can't find a method.

If you mean Windows Explorer then you could use a destop shortcut with a
command line such as
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\
or any folder path you wish after the C:\

Just drag the folder you want Windows Explorer to open at to the Desktop
and create a shortcut to it.

I really don't understand what you mean by " I would prefer it not to be
pointed at the Start Menu all the time." By default when you open Windows
Explorer it is at "Computer" not the Start Menu. If this is not what you
mean try and clarify.

I did create a shortcut on desktop as you suggested and that will suffice in
the interim. I hadn't thought of that simple solution.

In answer to your question. When I right click on start and select
"Explore" the window opens up and is defaulted to the Start Menu. This is a
new dell and it's been that way since a month ago when i got it. That's the
default i was hoping to change.

Any ideas on that?

That is the correct and expected behavior.
You are telling the system to *explore* the Start Menu by right clicking on
the Start *button*.

The "Explore" from the right click should, in my opinion have been named
"Explore from here" as it means exactly that. So the answer to your question
is no nor should you be able to change that. Like I said when you right
click a location or Icon and see "Explore" think of it as "Explore from this
location or here".

You should have mentioned this in your original post? When you select
Explore from the Start Menu, you will get Windows Explorer with the Start
Menu folder displayed, what did you expect to happen?

If this was changed, the shortcuts on the start menu would no longer work.

way to change how that works, by either adding an 'Explore from here'
choice OR find a way to modify the behavior of the current 'Explore'
choice. BUT, since you say the shortcuts on the start menu would no
longer work, do you know how to add an 'Explore from here' choice,
that will go to a user defined folder?

The whole point is that when you right click the START BUTTON, you get the
options that APPLY TO THE START BUTTON components. This is the same way that
every component in Windows has always worked. Those links are not
configurable, by design.

Why would you want to bury a link on an obscure right click menu? If you
want something like this, why not simply create a shortcut for Windows
Explorer and place the path to the folder you want to open in the Target
Line of the shortcut properties. You can then pin this shortcut to the Start
Menu, The Quick Launch Toolbar, or place it in any other handy location.
